Traditionally, flexible work arrangements have been more commonly adopted by those in office based roles. But we know that flex work means different things to different people, across a variety of roles and locations.
In order to make a real impact on our Company culture, we’re working to enable a more inclusive and diverse workforce where flex work becomes part of the everyday experience of anyone working at BHP.
At BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance's (BMA) Peak Downs Mine Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP), operator Brad Pearce was looking to spend more time at home in order to support his partner's new role. Brad approached his line leader to discuss what options he might have for a flexible working arrangement.
Previously on a 6/6 roster, Brad and his Superintendent arranged a job share with a colleague, allowing Brad to change to a 6/18 roster.
"I felt very comfortable talking about a potential job share arrangement and we were both keen to find ways for me to achieve a better work/life balance," Brad said.
Connor Gregory, Superintendent Processing, said Brad's job share has had positive impacts not only on Brad, but also on the broader team, by having the opportunity to see a job share working for an operational role.
"Job sharing ensures that we always have the required coverage and operations continue as normal," Connor said.
"I have seen a real step change in attitudes about Flex Work, with more and more team members asking questions about the different types of working arrangements.”
"The key to encouraging this behaviour is by line leaders keeping the lines of communication open and leading by example. We need to keep providing information about what Flex Work opportunities are available to our front line teams.”
