Earlier this month, BHP hosted the launch of the Women in Mining and Resources Queensland's (WIMARQ) 2018 Mentoring Program - with almost 200 industry representatives coming together to celebrate the launch of the program.
The launch came after this year's mentees and mentors were formally introduced, kicking off the first of many sessions designed to guide and support mentees as they progress through their careers.
As the program's Foundation Sponsor, BHP donated three mentee scholarships back to the community with the successful applicants all new to the industry.
As well as the three external mentee positions, BHP have 19 mentees and eight mentors participating in this year's program.
Liz Watts, General Manager Daunia mine, who addressed the mentees and mentors at the launch, said the experience she gained from participating in the program was invaluable.
"Having myself been involved in this program as a mentor, I witnessed first-hand the profound impact that my support, guidance, advice and absolute confidentiality had," Liz said.
"I also know, that I would not be doing what I do today without the support and guidance of many formal and informal mentoring relationships over the last 18 years."
Liz also acknowledged the success of inclusion and diversity programs at Daunia, such as the Indigenous female operator traineeship program and the crib relief program, in attracting and retaining females in the industry.
"The business case for increased diversity is clear, not just within our business and industry, but more broadly," Liz said.
"To establish a strong pipeline of talented and capable women, we must remain committed to providing opportunities for entry into our industry."
