Since 2014, the BHP Foundation has funded the CSIRO’s five-year Indigenous STEM Education Project in Australia. This innovative pilot project was implemented to increase interest and academic achievement among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in STEM subjects and related professions through six elements. Since the project began it has engaged with over 17,898 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, 1,755 teachers and 166 schools across Australia. An evaluation of the project shows a significant impact on engagement and achievement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with 81 per cent of students who attended the Aboriginal Summer School for Excellence in Technology and Science intending to have a STEM career, and 100 per cent of all schools participating in the Science Pathways for Indigenous Communities program teaching and assessing science in partnership with the community.
